Who knew you could win a pair of skis during biology class? Hannah Bussy, a Colorado Mountain College Breckenridge student, center, got a big surprise when Dave Askeland, CMC vice president and campus dean for Breckenridge and Dillon, left, and financial aid specialist Stephanie Beste arrived at the end of class on April 4. They surprised Bussy with a handcrafted pair of skis made by CMC Steamboat Springs ski and snowboard business students. Bussy won the skis in a drawing after she attended a workshop and filled out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. 1000 Words: Gov. Hickenlooper visits CMC Breckenridge

On Oct. 30, 2018, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper stopped at Colorado Mountain College Breckenridge during his statewide farewell tour. On behalf of the college CMC Trustees Patty Theobald and Pat Chlouber, as well as President Carrie Besnette Hauser, welcomed him. Answering questions from Hauser and several others, the governor spoke to staff, faculty, students and community members about higher education’s role in providing workforce training and education in support of Colorado’s economy. He took questions and comments from Colorado State Rep. Millie Hamner, Summit County Commissioners Dan Gibbs and Thomas Davidson, CMC Board President Theobald, Associate Professor Margaret Gilmon and alumna Flor Cruz Valdez, who works as an academic advisor at the college. The conversation touched on the state’s $62 billion outdoor industry and CMC’s role in training the workforce needed to fill those jobs. 1000 Words: CMC hosts Outdoor Industry Workforce Summit

Colorado Mountain College faculty, administrators and students recently participated in a daylong summit with outdoor industry leaders at Morgridge Commons in Glenwood Springs. Heading up a panel discussion were, from left, Steve Skadron, mayor of Aspen; Ann Baker Easley, executive director of Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado; Amy Roberts, executive director of the Outdoor Industry Association; Jen McLaren, president and CEO of Smartwool; Len Zanni, co-owner and head of marketing of Big Agnes; John LeCoq, founder and owner of Fishpond; and moderator Luis Benitez, executive director of the Colorado Recreation Industry Office. In the background is a mural from renowned photographer John Fielder, who also spoke at the summit (and is seated at the lower left in this photo). The summit was the culmination of meetings held throughout CMC’s district, at which college representatives asked outdoor industry leaders about ways CMC can better train and educate students for careers in the field. Colorado Mountain College was recently named Top Adventure College by Elevation Outdoors Magazine for its numerous educational opportunities in outdoor recreation and natural resource management, and its proximity to many year-round adventure-based locations. 1000 Words: CMC at MALCS Summer Institute

Nine students from Colorado Mountain College's teacher education program at CMC Glenwood Springs and Vail Valley traveled in August to the University of Texas at El Paso to give presentations at the 2018 MALCS Summer Institute. Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (Women Active in Letters and Social Change) brought together Chicanas, Latinas and Native American women working in academia and community settings from across the country to share information and offer support to each other. 1000 Words: CMC Breckenridge nurse pinning ceremony

Colorado Mountain College Breckenridge graduated 12 nursing students on May 4, 2018, at what’s known as a pinning ceremony, a symbolic welcoming of nursing school graduates into the nursing profession. CMC offers medical certification and associate degree education at a number of campuses and online; associate and bachelor’s degrees in nursing are offered at Breckenridge and CMC Spring Valley at Glenwood Springs.
