Silverthorne author Karin Mitchell, the disabilities services coordinator at Colorado Mountain College in Breckenridge and Dillon, recently was named a finalist in an international award competition, for her first novel.

On Sept. 1, Mitchell learned “Between Families” was a finalist in the Readers’ Favorite Book Reviews and Award Contest in the Young Adult – Social Issues category. The self-published book focuses on a 12-year-old girl growing up in an emotionally and socially destructive setting – a setting Mitchell has confronted many times as a special education teacher working with youth in public schools and institutions.

Readers’ Favorite receives thousands of entries worldwide, which are sorted into more than 100 categories. Entrants come from major publishing houses to independent authors, and from first-time, self-published authors, such as Mitchell, to New York Times bestselling writers.

“Between Families” is available at local bookstores, online and through the Colorado Mountain College Virtual Library. For more information about the award, go to readersfavorite.com.
