What are the true causes of population growth? What impacts do a stable environment, and access to health care, have on such growth?
These and related topics will be explored in depth when Colorado Mountain College Breckenridge presents “Population Dynamics and Human Rights: Integrating Comprehensive Health Care with Environmental Sustainability” at the Eileen & Paul Finkel Auditorium Nov. 14. The lecture is part of the college’s Fall Sustainability Gathering, in which sustainability studies students present their capstone projects.
Presenter Hannah Evans is the population, health and environment specialist at Population Connection. Formerly Zero Population Growth, the Washington, D.C.-based Population Connection has been a voice for population stabilization since 1968.
During her presentation, Evans will explore the connections among population growth, access to comprehensive health care and environmental sustainability. Through an examination of some of the root causes of population growth, Evans said she will highlight “the associations among poverty, marginalization, women’s rights and environmental pressures made worse by climate change.”
Before joining Population Connection’s development team, Evans worked as an adjunct professor of women’s studies and taught classes on gender, science and feminist theory. She has nonprofit experience working as a program developer for sustainable agriculture and public health programs in Honduras and Panama, and has worked as a researcher on food security issues throughout southern California.
Evans has a bachelor’s degree in environmental policy and political science and a master’s in political ecology from San Diego State University, where her research focused on sustainability labeling and ethical consumption.
“Population Dynamics and Human Rights” will take place at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at CMC Breckenridge, 107 Denison Placer Road. CMC English and communications faculty member Joyce Mosher will act as moderator. The presentation is free and the public is encouraged and welcome to attend.
Before the lecture CMC sustainability studies students will present their capstone projects at 4:30 p.m.
