Alpine Bank Scholar: Verónica Mendivil

Alpine Bank Scholarships are helping 17 graduates of Western Slope high schools attend Colorado Mountain College next fall. Three upper-valley students earned 2013 Alpine Bank scholarships: Verónica Mendivil of El Jebel, who graduated from Yampah Mountain High School, and Marcela Carrasco and Yoseline Ayala-Pineda, recent graduates of Aspen High School. Today’s profile features Verónica Mendivil.

Verónica Mendivil has always had a strong academic record at Yampah Mountain High School, but she has had to work especially hard to finish school after having a child her senior year. Despite the challenge of motherhood and a full course load, Mendivil has excelled, maintaining a 3.5 GPA and managing to complete her high school education a year early.

Mendivil calls her mother her idol, noting how hard she has worked to support her family as a single parent herself and how she’s stressed the importance of learning. “My mom has raised me to always pursue an education,” she said.

Because Mendivil’s family is unable to pay for college, she was unsure whether she could pursue a degree until she received the Alpine Bank scholarship. She looks forward to studying in CMC’s Isaacson School of New Media, with dreams to become a music producer.

“I want to show that no matter what bumps come your way, you can follow your dreams,” she said. “This is a step forward to my dream.”
