Members shine in competitions, the team’s hard work pays off
The Ski Team has been a very active group of young adults lately. Their early season conditioning program started at the beginning of the semester and is truly never ending. The team participated in two team building events. First, they headed off to Rocky Mountain National Park for a great day of sightseeing and elk viewing. The day was warm, sunny and just a great day to enjoy the park. A few weeks later the Ski Team joined the Fly Fishing Club for a day of fishing at Maribu Ranch
October came along and off the Ski Team went to Summit County, Loveland Ski Area Copper Mountain, to begin their early season on snow training. They are happy to report that their time spent “racing” back and forth to training was well worth the effort. The team’s first year student athletes have made the transition to a new team very nicely. They are all ears and eager to improve and test themselves racing against the best college ski racers in the country. The team has had the opportunity to train with many teams from across the country. To mention a few they have trained with their friends at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, Team Norway, University of Alaska Anchorage, and Plymouth State University.
The Ski Team’s early season racing started with a day trip over to Vail for two Giant Slaloms. A very strong field allowed them to work out the cobwebs against the real deal. The day was very profitable in reinforcing what the memebers had been working on all fall. The group’s next races required them to hop on a plane in Denver with a quick stop over in Seattle, then off to Anchorage Alaska and Alyeska Ski Resort. The trip was a whirlwind. The Ski Team arrived on Wednesday night, checked in, ate dinner, then got a good night sleep before they started racing. The first two races were Slaloms under the lights followed by two Giant Slaloms under what little natural light there was. The team had four great days of racing. The field was strong with our main competition coming from University of Alaska Ski Team, CMC more then held its own. Brendan Rozell, “11”, had the team’s top finishes with two 8th place finishes in Slalom and a 6th place finish in Giant Slalom, Eric Hicks, “12”, placed 14th in the Slalom, Mike Holt, “12”, placed both 19th+ 20th in the Slalom, Steve Kemp, “12”, placed 17th in the Slalom, and Jake Davis, “12”, placed 25th in the Giant Slalom.
The Ski Team will be racing twice this weekend at home on Howelsen Hill with Saturday’s race under the lights.
This has been a great start to the season and it is looking good for the remainder of the team’s year. Stay tuned for their next update.
