Sopris Theatre Company at Colorado Mountain College opens its 2017-18 season Oct. 20 with “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead,” a modern tragicomedy offering a wildly different perspective on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

Written by Tom Stoppard, in 1968 it received Tony and New York Drama Critics Circle awards for best play. G. Thomas Cochran directs the Sopris Theatre Company production, which follows the Prince of Denmark’s two hapless friends as they bumble their way to their inevitable end. “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern” will run Oct. 20-21 and 26-28 at 7 p.m., and Oct. 22 and 29 at 2 p.m.

The remaining performances of the season include:

  • “Uncommon Women and Others” (Dec. 1-3, 7-10) – At a reunion six years after graduation, funny, touching and sometimes cynical flashbacks take five friends to their days at Mount Holyoke College, where they learn what shaped them. Written by Wendy Wasserstein and directed by Brad Moore.
  • “Red” (Feb. 16-18, 22-25) – Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko lands a major commission producing murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons restaurant, though doing so forces him to confront his ambition and vulnerability. Winner of the 2010 Tony Award for best play. Written by John Logan and directed by Kelly Ketzenbarger.
  • “Cabaret” (April 6-8, 13-15, 19-22) – Set in Berlin at the end of the 1920s, when Germany is slowly yielding to the Third Reich. At a bawdy cabaret, a garish master of ceremonies invites the audience to forget their troubles. Book by Joe Masteroff, based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood; music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb; directed by Brad Moore.
  • Student Workshop Production (April 26) – An evening featuring all original works by Colorado Mountain College theater students.

Single tickets are $18 for adults and $13 for students, seniors and CMC employees, except for “Cabaret” which are $20 for adults and $15 for students, seniors and CMC employees, and the Student Workshop Production, which is free. All performances are at the New Space Theatre at Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley, 3000 County Road 114, Glenwood Springs.
