Alpine Bank Scholar: Sandy Loera

All through the week, we’ll be featuring Colorado Mountain College’s 2013-2014 Alpine Bank Scholars. This year’s scholarship is helping 17 graduates of Western Slope high schools attend Colorado Mountain College next fall. Today’s profile features Sandy Loera, from Eagle Valley High School.

Scholars want to ‘pay forward’ support

Sandy Loera, a student at Eagle Valley High School, is driven by providing a future not only for herself but for her young son. The single mother has worked extra hours after school and through school vacations to maintain high grades and succeed in high school.

Loera said her family is going through a tough time and she does not have the financial support to attend college. Receiving the Alpine Bank scholarship “is a huge weight off my shoulders,” she said.

The student has always had a love of cooking. She can remember her father challenging her to cook-offs, when she’d respond, “I think I can cook that better.” She hopes to work in the culinary field and open her own business.
