Sopris Theatre Company, formerly known as CMC Theatre, will present two encore performances of “Uncle Vanya” at Aspen’s Wheeler Opera House Feb. 2-3. This follows the play’s successful seven-show run at Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley in Glenwood Springs during the 2015-16 season.

The college’s theater company will present Irish playwright Brian Friel’s interpretation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya,” an intriguing look at somewhat misguided love affairs. Uncle Vanya” is a study of humor, hope and loss – loss of romantic love, of ambition, of ideals, of illusions. Though the play is over a hundred years old, it probes at the central questions of human nature proving that these questions are both timeless and universal and that Chekhov’s understanding of them is as acute as ever.

Directed by Brad Moore, this sadly funny drama features a cast of local favorites. Uncle Vanya (played by CMC photography faculty member Joseph Gamble) and his niece Sonya (played by Olivia Savard) are hard-working and emotionally reined-in when their lives implode as visitors arrive to the country estate they manage. Vanya falls in love with his brother-in-law’s new, beautiful, young wife, and Sonya falls for a local doctor – though complications arise. Tom Cochran, Cassidy Willey and Gary Ketzenbarger also play key roles.

Tickets are $20 and available at aspenshowtix.com or 970-920-5770. Curtain is 7 p.m. on Feb. 2-3. Season producers are Jim and Connie Calaway.
