Sopris Theatre Company at Colorado Mountain College calls for actors for two productions

Auditions September 1

Sopris Theatre Company, formerly known as CMC Theatre, will hold open auditions for William Gibson’s “The Miracle Worker” and Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Inspector Hound” Sept. 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. Auditions will take place at Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs-Spring Valley, and callbacks will be held the following day

“The Miracle Worker” is based on Helen Keller’s autobiography, “The Story of My Life.” Blind, deaf and mute since her formative years, young Keller, unable to communicate, is frustrated and violent. In desperation, her parents seek help from the Perkins Institute, which sends them a “half-blind Yankee schoolgirl” tutor named Annie Sullivan.

The cast consists of four male roles, four female roles and roles for five to 10 children of various ages. Performance dates at Spring Valley are Oct. 16-25, and at Aspen’s Wheeler Opera House Feb. 5 and 6. The play is directed by Brad Moore.

Those auditioning for “The Miracle Worker” are asked to prepare a dramatic contemporary monologue.

“The Real Inspector Hound” follows feuding theater critics Moon and Birdboot, who are swept into the whodunit they are viewing. In the hilarious spoof of Agatha Christie-like melodramas that follows, the body under the sofa proves to be the missing first-string critic. Performance dates are Nov. 28-29 and Dec. 3-6. The play is directed by G. Thomas Cochran.

Those auditioning for “The Real Inspector Hound” are asked to prepare a comedic contemporary monologue.
