Anderson Ranch’s Deroualle, CMC’s Gair unite in ‘Material Landscape’
On display at Colorado Mountain College Aspen is the exhibit “Material Landscape,” featuring ceramics by Louise Deroualle and Stuart Gair. The community is invited to a free, Q&A-style interview via Zoom at 4 p.m. Nov. 13.
Gair is a new ceramics faculty member at CMC Aspen, and Deroualle is the ceramics studio coordinator at Anderson Ranch Arts Center.
Gair writes on his website: “I make pottery that is intricately decorated and utilitarian in nature. It is important that each piece is approachable and highly functional to establish trust with the viewer and invite closer examination. As a student of history, I’m drawn to the essence of strength found in architecture, masonry and work that has endured through time. Surface treatment provides me the opportunity to explore these interests through the subtleties of architectural pattern, detail and geometry.”
In her artist’s statement, Deroualle says, “My work is an abstracted representation of me: my identity, the way in which I relate to others and understand the environment I am in. I use ceramic materials to create formal abstractions that reveal different facets — physical, experiential, emotional — of myself.”
