The Sopris Theatre Company, formerly known as Colorado Mountain College Theatre, opens its 2015-16 season Oct. 23 with “The Miracle Worker,” William Gibson’s beloved story based on Hellen Keller’s autobiography, “The Story of My Life.”
Blind, deaf and mute since her formative years, young Keller, unable to communicate, is frustrated and violent. In desperation, her parents seek help from the Perkins Institute, which sends them a “half-blind Yankee schoolgirl” tutor named Annie Sullivan.
Performance dates of “The Miracle Worker” at Spring Valley are Oct. 23-25 and Oct. 29-Nov. 1, and at Aspen’s Wheeler Opera House Feb. 5-6. The play is directed by Brad Moore.
The remaining shows of the season include:
- “The Real Inspector Hound” (Nov. 28-29 and Dec. 3-6) – a hilarious spoof of Agatha Christie-like melodramas that follows feuding theater critics who are swept into the whodunit they are viewing. Written by Tom Stoppard and directed by G. Thomas Cochran.
- “Anton in Show Business” (Feb. 19-21 and 25-28) – a madcap comedy that follows three actresses across the footlights, down the rabbit hole and into a strangely familiar Wonderland that looks a lot like American theater. Written by Jane Martin and directed by Gary Ketzenbarger.
- “Uncle Vanya” (April 15-17 and 21-24) – a perennial classic centered on two lives, Uncle Vanya and his niece Sonya. Anton Chekhov’s classic was translated by Brian Friel and directed by Brad Moore.
- Student workshop production (April 28) – original works by CMC theater students.
