Frances Moore Lappé keynote speaker at CMC Sustainability Conference

Renowned writer and activist Frances Moore Lappé will give the keynote address at the CMC Vail Valley Sustainability Conference at 6:30 p.m. April 16.

Colorado Mountain College Vail Valley at Edwards will present renowned writer and activist Frances Moore Lappé at the college’s fourth sustainability conference on April 16.

Lappé’s bestselling 1971 book, “Diet for a Small Planet,” has sold over three million copies and has been called “one of the most influential political tracts of the times” by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Lappé has written 18 additional books about hunger, poverty, the environment and what she calls “living democracy.” She is the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award and the Outstanding Public Scholar Award, among others, and co-founded Food First, the Center for Living Democracy, the American News Service and Small Planet Institute.

Following the conference theme, “Empowering Our Community through Research and Practice,” activities starting at 3:30 p.m. will also include student presentations on community endeavors and a faculty member discussing marine biodiversity. The college’s Sustainability Studies department will also unveil details about a national partnership among CMC, Recycle Across America and Unilever supporting a Recycling Is Beautiful campaign.

After a reception at 6 p.m., Lappé’s keynote address will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Q&A and book signing. Find out more about Lappé at www.smallplanet.org/frances-moore-lappe.
