For those who see the world as their classroom, Colorado Mountain College offers college credit for study abroad courses in three countries for spring and summer 2014. Dive into intensive language classes in Spain, examine the culture of resistance in Guatemala or experience the cultural history of South Africa. Each study abroad opportunity translates into college credit, so you can invest in your future while exploring the world.

Registering now for spring

CMC’s Spring Semester in Spain, in historic Granada, begins Feb. 2, 2014, and continues through April 26. The semester of independent study includes 12 weeks of classes, 20 hours of Spanish instruction and five sessions devoted to Spanish culture. Classes will be held at the Don Quixote language school, within walking distance to the Alhambra palace. Applications are due Dec. 13, 2013.

Over spring break, CMC invites globally minded participants to earn six credits in art and political science while learning about Mayan cultural identity in the context of Guatemala’s civil war and post-conflict transition. In the course Guatemala: Culture and Resistance, students will have the opportunity to meet artists, politicians and activists who are shaping today’s Guatemalan culture. The course begins Jan. 24, 2014, with travel dates of March 6-17.  The registration and payment deadline is Dec. 13, 2013.

Coming up for summer

From May 16 through June 4, 2014, students can experience the politics, culture and society of South Africa while earning transferable credits in sociology and anthropology. The course and trip theme is race, state and nation-building. Participants will visit Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bophutatswana, Stellenbosch and Cape Town and meet leaders of political parties, human rights organizations and more. Deadline to register is Feb. 3. Full payment deadline is March 18.

CMC will also offer a summer immersion in Spain, where students can earn transfer-level Spanish credits on the Mediterranean coast of Valencia. The deadline for the summer course is April 1, 2014, for the four-week program that runs June 17-July 19, 2014.

Past study abroad participants include high school juniors and seniors, full- or part-time college students and community adults looking for a travel learning opportunity. For more information, contact Lauren DeAre at ldeare@coloradomtn.edu or 970-319-5817.
