Sarah Johnson's outdoor skills workshops build greater enjoyment and appreciation in summer hiking excursions.

Wilderness Cooking is designed to broaden the perspective on eating in the wilderness. “It’s for people who are stuck on freeze-dried foods,” Johnson says. The class demonstrates how to cook a wide variety of meals on backpacking stoves with ingredients that are easy to find, tasty and inexpensive. The two-session workshop is held June 6 (5-7 p.m.) and June 8 (5-8 p.m.).

Individuals who are new to backpacking are invited to take Johnson’s one-evening Backpacking Workshop, which covers trip planning, equipment, simple cooking and sanitation. It is held June 13 from 6-9 p.m.

The Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop, Johnson says, is for “anyone who is open to improving their minimum impact practices.” Because of the increased use of public lands, Leave No Trace practices are continually revised to further minimize impacts. This workshop will examine current standards for both day use and overnight excursions on public lands. It meets June 15 from 6-9 p.m.

All workshops are held at the Colorado Mountain College Lappala Center in Carbondale (690 Colorado Ave.).
