Campus Sustainability Day

Campuses across the nation commit to sustainabl

CMC is one of hundreds of colleges and universities working to increase sustainability on campus.  Recently, according to Rifle Campus Vice President Nancy Genova, the coilege submitted its “Climate Action Plan” to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, and was told it was one of the most comprehensive plans submitted. The college now gets 13-15% of its current energy use from renewable sources such as PV solar and ground source heating. CMC’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2050.

This week, CMC is taking part in the national Campus Sustainability Day, which takes place Wednesday, Oct. 24th. The day is dedicated to encouraging sustainability on campuses throughout the U.S.

CMC’s initial recommendation for individuals taking part in this day was to encourage everyone to turn off their computer monitors and lights when they went home for the night.  Many CMC staff and faculty wrote to encourage additional actions our employees could take as well as to share events their campuses were putting on in recognition of Campus Sustainability Day. Here’s a few:

Edwards is hosting a “Food Day” event today, October 22 from noon-6pm. The event will feature healthy and educational food booths that enhance the communities awareness of sustainable food.

Rifle is hosting a movie event entitled “Watershed“ on Wednesday, October 24 at 11:30am.  This film deals with Colorado River water issues in the western United States.  Produced by Robert Redford, the film features local Garfield County residents, including former Rifle Mayor, Keith Lambert, who will speak before the movie. CMC staff in Rifle are encouraged to spend their lunch hour to view the screening.

Thanks for helping CMC stay green!
