Doann Houghton-Alico sailed across 43,000 nautical miles and 41 countries
Author and poet Doann Houghton-Alico set out on a sailing adventure with her husband, for a 10-year journey across 43,000 nautical miles and 41 countries. Houghton-Alico will tell tales of her travels April 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Eileen & Paul Finkel Auditorium at Colorado Mountain College in Breckenridge.
Houghton-Alico and her husband Wayne Edgar shared a love of sailing and had been sailing for many years before their retirement. They decided now with unlimited time to spend at sea, why not sail around the world? So they did.
They left from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in 2001 and sailed west, returning in 2010. They spent four years in the South Pacific, as well as time in such countries as Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey and Morocco, exploring most of the countries they visited from both the sea and on land. They encountered storms, pirates and wonderful people of every nationality and language.
Houghton-Alico will use passages from her two books, the published “Dancing Fish,” a nonfiction narrative, memoir and poetry chapbook, and a second book, a memoir, to tell her tales of the adventures, local people, wildlife and what it feels like to be at sea for days on end. Her talk will include photos, video clips and stories from her travels.
