Sopris Theatre Company, formerly known as CMC Theatre, will present two encore performances of William Gibson’s “The Miracle Worker” at Aspen’s Wheeler Opera House Feb. 5-6. This follows the play’s successful seven-show run at Colorado Mountain College’s Spring Valley campus in October.

During the renowned play’s performances on Broadway it snagged several Tony awards, including for best play.

“The Miracle Worker” is based on Helen Keller’s autobiography, “The Story of My Life.” Blind, deaf and mute since her formative years, young Keller, unable to communicate, is frustrated and violent, and her family has nearly abandoned hope for her. In desperation, her parents seek help from the Perkins Institute, which sends them a “half-blind Yankee schoolgirl” tutor named Anne Sullivan.

The play, originally performed on Broadway in 1959, led to the much-loved film starring Anne Bancroft as Anne Sullivan and introducing a young Patty Duke as Helen Keller. Both actresses won Oscars for their work on the film.

The play is directed by Brad Moore, and features Emily Henley as Helen Keller and Kelly Ketzenbarger as Annie Sullivan. Tickets are $20 and available at aspenshowtix.com or 970-920-5770. Curtain is 7 p.m. on Feb. 5-6.
