‘Ode to Muir’ screens at CMC Steamboat Springs

Colorado Mountain College Steamboat Springs will present a benefit screening of “Ode to Muir,” a new film by Teton Gravity Research, on Dec. 5 and 6. The documentary features snowboarder, adventurer and founder of Protect Our Winters Jeremy Jones and two-time Olympic snowboarder Elena Hight during a winter wilderness expedition in California.

The film follows Jones and Hight on a 40-mile foot-powered expedition deep into California’s John Muir Wilderness. Their journey balances the challenges of winter camping, aesthetic first descents and grueling climbs up the Sierra Nevada’s biggest mountains. The two offer personal reflections on the importance of the natural world and those who first traveled it generations ago, sharing perspectives gleaned from what it truly means to explore a great American wilderness.

Before screening the film, Matt Jost, CMC Steamboat Springs assistant dean of instruction, will briefly describe the college’s upcoming Rivers of Life study-abroad class and trip to Chile and show a 90-second short. Proceeds from “Ode to Muir” benefit the study-abroad class. Door prizes from local businesses will given away.

Doors open at 6 p.m. both Dec. 5 and 6, and the program begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Allbright Family Auditorium, CMC Steamboat Springs, 1275 Crawford Ave. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and free with student ID. Purchase tickets through Eventbrite.
