Construction Activities Occurring (January 2016)
Construction of a causeway, the south pier caisson and utility work.
Causeway: The contractor is building a causeway (temporary rock road) along the Colorado River bank to use as a working platform. A causeway is needed to create closer access to the bridge. This causeway is roughly 500 ft. long and 50-75 ft. wide. The causeway will be made out of rock and will be removed when the project is complete. Cranes, drills, and trucks will be staged on the causeway.
Utility work: The contractor is installing a storm drain line and a permanent waterline. Deep utility work begins along the north lane of 7th St between Colorado Avenue and Cooper Avenue.
Caisson construction: The contractor will begin building a caisson for construction of the south pier. A caisson is large water tight retaining structure used to work on the foundation of the bridge pier. Construction activities such as shoring and screw micro-piling will occur to reinforce the foundation of the piers.
Upcoming Construction Activity
- Beginning the week of Jan. 11 – Jan. 15, 2016 the contractor will remove the public restrooms and existing walls under existing GAB on north side of 7th St.
