The CMC Latino Student Club organized and hosted a Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) Fiesta Monday, November 2nd at the Steamboat Springs Campus. Participants learned about the history and traditions associated with the Dia de Muertos Festival and took part in the holiday’s traditional activities including face painting and sugar skull decorating and the construction of Dia de Muertos altars and enjoyed a special lunch from Sodexo.
The fiesta was a big success, with a large group of students, staff, and community members turning out for the activities. Club advisor, Professor Terry Hunter said, “The club officers and members worked very hard on the event and it was great to see such a strong turnout for the festivities.”
Club President Elena Gonzalez and Vice-President Monica Sanchez were excited by the opportunity to share the cultural aspects of the holiday in a festive environment. The CMC Latino Student Club is a new club at CMC Steamboat Springs and the event was a perfect match with their mission, which is to encourage fellowship and synergy between Latino and all CMC students through social and educational activities. Gonzalez and Sanchez found the experience of organizing and partaking in the Dia De Muertos Fiesta deeply rewarding.
“It’s great to see (the club) get off to such a wonderful start,” says Hunter. ” We are looking forward to more exciting and educational events in the future. All are welcome to join our club.”
