The season opener for Sopris Theatre Company, formerly known as CMC Theatre, is William Gibson’s “The Miracle Worker.” During its run on Broadway the play snagged several Tony awards, including for best play.

“The Miracle Worker” is based on Helen Keller’s autobiography, “The Story of My Life.” Blind, deaf and mute since her formative years, young Keller, unable to communicate, is frustrated and violent, and her family has nearly abandoned hope for her. In desperation, her parents seek help from the Perkins Institute, which sends them a “half-blind Yankee schoolgirl” tutor named Anne Sullivan.

The play, originally performed on Broadway in 1959, led to the much-loved film starring Anne Bancroft as Anne Sullivan and introducing a young Patty Duke as Helen Keller. Both actresses won Oscars for their work on the film.

The play is directed by Brad Moore. Tickets are $18 for adults and $13 for students, staff, faculty and seniors. Curtain is 7 p.m. on Oct. 23, 24, 29, 30 and 31 and 2 p.m. on Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, at the New Space Theatre at Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs-Spring Valley, 3000 County Road 114. In addition, a special encore performance will be at Aspen’s Wheeler Opera House Feb. 5 and 6.
