“Unmarried in America,” written by Glenwood Springs playwright and Colorado Mountain College adjunct instructor Kristin (K.D.) Carlson, opens at Vintage Theatre in Aurora, Colo., on May 8. The play, which explores the national debate around marriage equality, had its first public reading at Colorado Mountain College in the fall of 2011.
Aspen Stage and an all-local cast took a cutting from the play to the statewide Colorado Community Theatre Coalition competition in 2012. From there, the play earned slots at both the regional and national American Association of Community Theatre competitions. The production garnered a standing ovation and four awards at AACTFest 2013, held at the Tarkington Center in Carmel, In.
Following its festival success, “Unmarried in America” was selected for a showcase performance at the Denver Center Academy, where Vintage Theatre artistic director Craig Bond spotted it. Along its developmental road, the play has featured many favorite local actors and has been showcased at Thunder River Theatre in Carbondale and Lake Dillon Theatre in Dillon, Colo.
Directed by Wendy S. Moore, who also teaches as an adjunct instructor at Colorado Mountain College, the new production features a metro Denver cast and will enjoy a full run at Vintage Theatre in Aurora. The show runs weekends, May 8 through June 21. Tickets are $24 and $28 in advance and can be reserved at www.vintagetheatre.org.
