On World Book Night, book givers distribute free books to members of their communities. During last year’s campaign, 25,000 volunteer book givers went out in 5,800 towns and cities across America and personally gave out a total of a half million paperbacks.

CMC’s Leadville Campus Library is seeking volunteers in Lake, Chaffee, Park, Eagle, and Summit counties to apply to be “book givers” for 2013 World Book Night U.S.  The deadline to apply is January 23, 2013.  Apply at the World Book Night U.S. website: http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/.

Book givers receive 20 free copies of a title that is chosen when registering to participate.  These books are picked up by the givers at a special kick-off event at the Leadville Campus Library in mid-April.  On April 23, book givers go out and give away their free books to members of their communities, targeting light readers or those with limited access to books.

The honorary chairpersons of World Book Night 2013 will be best-selling novelists Ann Patchett and James Patterson. Patchett’s novel, Bel Canto, was on the list last year, and Patterson’s kids’ book, Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life, is among the 30 titles to be given away this year.  Patterson said: “In my experience, when people like what they are doing, they do more of it. This is the genius of World Book Night — it gets people reading by connecting them with amazing, enjoyable books. I’m honored to be a part of it.”

“I’m very proud to be a part of World Book Night,” Ann Patchett added.  “As both a writer and a bookseller, I’m all in favor of getting books into the hands of people who might not otherwise have access to them.”

Share the love of a good book with others in our local community by applying to be a book giver for World Book Night 2013.
