Solar class offered online

Sun and cloudsIt seems improbable that a primarily hands-on subject like solar electric systems installation could be offered online. But this March,Colorado Mountain College’s Virtual Campus is doing just that. The course, Solar Photovoltaic Components, starts March 8.

Students will learn basic safety principles and detailed knowledge of photovoltaic components. The online course also presents an overview of site analysis and special purpose tools.

The online course will be taught by internationally-known solar energy expert, Ken Olson, a former full-time faculty member at Colorado Mountain College’s retired solar retrofit program. Ken is President/Owner of Sol Energy of Carbondale, Colorado. He co-authored Stand-Alone Photovoltaic Systems: A Handbook of Recommended Design Practices. Other career highlights include…

  • First person in Colorado to attain NABCEP certification
  • Certified by the CoSEIA
  • Master’s Degree in Environmental Planning in  Solar Technology
  • LEED Accredited Professional
  • Co-founded Solar Energy International

This course satisfies one of the requirements for the Colorado Mountain College Photovoltaic Installer Certificate. The College is exploring options to offer another certificate, Basic Solar Photovoltaic, entirely online in the coming year.
