Leadville- Ten Fort Carson soldiers recently spent three days in the tranquility and splendor of the local mountains to renew their minds and bodies. They were participants of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Inc. (PHWFF) for Fort Carson and were accompanied by two PHWFF staff. They were hosted by Colorado Mountain College Leadville Campus for the third year and stayed in its residence hall from June 8 through 11.
The soldiers received fly tying instruction at the college and fished at Hayden Meadows the first day. The second and third days they were guests of Homestake Trout Club and Mt. Massive Lakes, where the residents opened their hearts and fishing waters to the soldiers. They also generously provided delicious meals to the soldiers during their visit. Local volunteers experienced in fly fishing mentored the soldiers in fly fishing.
The community’s generosity was overwhelming. Lonny Andrews, an Army veteran, expressed, “Great trip. The college was extremely helpful in promoting the Project Healing Waters program. Fishing was great, and the soldiers had a great time.” Active duty soldier, Mark Stevenson, agreed that “Fishing was awesome, the people were awesome. Everyone had a great time!”
PHWFF is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active duty military personnel and veterans through fly fishing; and emphasizes the skills of fly fishing and fly tying to help the wounded soldiers regain the use of their damaged bodies, increase their fine motor skills, and build their self-confidence.
