Special to the Daily “First Snow,” Joann Carhart Levy, first-place People’s Choice winner for the 2015 Colorado Mountain College and Vail Valley Art Guild Art Show.

More than 300 works of art are on display at the Colorado Mountain College campus in Edwards through Oct. 29. All paintings, photographs and ceramic works are by CMC students and members of the Vail Valley Art Guild. During the opening reception on Aug. 21, visitors voted for their favorite works of art, and the Art Guild recently announced the winners.

All three artists are enrolled in classes at CMC and are members of the Vail Valley Art Guild.

‘FIRST SNOW’

Joann Carhart Levy’s work, “First Snow,” the first-place People’s Choice recipient, is influenced by French, Russian and early American impressionist painters. Carhart Levy paints in oils because she prefers the textures, abstract brush strokes and vivid colors you can achieve with this medium. Living in Colorado with the changing seasons and magnificent landscapes, her plein air paintings provide an intimate interpretation, capturing scenes in oils that cannot be captured through a camera lens. She often completes her paintings in a single outdoor session.

‘APRIL IS THE CRUELEST MONTH’

Rosalind Reed is now pursuing her lifelong dream to be an artist. This is her third career after previous award-winning work as a landscape designer. Her prior career was in real estate investment banking. Her painting, “April is the Cruelest Month,” caught the attention of many of those who attended the opening night reception, and it was awarded second place for People’s Choice.

‘SKI MAP: ARAPAHOE BASIN’

Lynn Feiger, the artist behind “Ski Map: Arapahoe Basin,” the third-place award winner, is an expressionist painter who lives in Minturn. In 2014, her painting “Back Bowls: Last Run” was awarded Best in Show at the first annual Vail CMC Art Show. In 2015, she was accepted for a three-year mentorship at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass to study under internationally acclaimed artist Enrique Martinez Celaya. She has studied art at the Colorado Art Institute, The Denver Art Students League, CMC, University of California, San Francisco and UCLA. Her studies include workshops with a number of accomplished artists in Europe and in the United States.

The CMC/Vail Valley Art Guild Art Show will continue through Oct 29. All of the art on display is available for purchase through the CMC library. CMC is open Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visit www.vailvalleyartguild.com to learn more.
