The 14th Annual Cloud City Rail Jam returns to Leadville’s Dutch Henri Hill on Saturday, March 24, 2018, with a new twist. This year’s rail jam will include a pond-skimming event (weather dependent) as well as the classic all-ages rail jam competition. Entry is $15, cash only, and those who bring a nonperishable food donation will receive $5 off their entry fee.
This all-ages rail jam will have separate divisions for men and women (13+) and a grom (youth) division (12 years and under). The pond-skimming event will be for participants age 14 and older.
Competitors under 18 years of age will need a parent or guardian signature to participate, and helmets are required for all. Registration and practice will begin at 10 a.m. The first 30 to register will receive a complimentary jersey made by Dr. Ryde Industries.
Prizes will be awarded to the top competitors in each division. Concession food and beverages will be available for purchase, and music will be provided by DJ Basstek.
The annual rail jam event at Colorado Mountain College Leadville is hosted by the college’s ski area operations program and its Events Management class. From start to finish, the Cloud City Rail Jam is a final project for the semester-long course, and students receive individual grades for their participation. Students are responsible for all aspects of the event, including terrain park design, building features, planning, promotion, prizes and sponsorships.
The list of sponsors and prizes is expected to grow leading up to the event. Event sponsors to date include Dr. Ryde Industries, Breeze, Dragon, Liberty Skis, Black Strap, Ski Cooper, 10th Mountain Hut Association, Beyond Generic and Fairly Casual. Prizes include a snowboard made by ski and snowboard business students at Colorado Mountain College Steamboat Springs, a free tune and demo rental voucher, a hut trip for four, a season pass to Ski Cooper, gear, goggles, t-shirts, socks and various swag items.
